History

For 30 years, the Learning Disabilities Association of Windsor-Essex County has been supporting individuals with learning disabilities in Windsor-Essex County. While the LDAWE is a local chapter of LDAO, local volunteers govern its board of directors.

In September 1993, a small group of concerned parents and professionals in the Windsor – Essex County area reactivated the Association of Children with Learning Disabilities under the New name Learning Disabilities Association of Windsor-Essex, with the mission to improve the quality of life for people with learning disabilities.

LDAWE received a 3-year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to open a resource and support centre and to hire LDAWE’s first two staff members in 2001. Three years later, in February 2004, the Association received its Charitable Status from the Canada Revenue Agency.

As the needs of the community grew, so did LDAWE. In May 2008, LDAWE moved into a larger office space within the same building. By July 2010, LDAWE expanded again by adding a program room to the existing office space. November 2012, LDAWE received its incorporation number, separate from LDAO’s, and a new Charitable Status number.

In July 2020, LDAWE moved to its current John McGivney Children’s Centre offices.

Today, after 30 years of community support, the LDAWE continues to provide programs and services for families, youth and adults with learning disabilities. We remain committed to improving the lives of people with learning disabilities at all stages of life.
