SERVICES

Information and Referral:
Information is available on a wide variety of issues pertaining to learning disabilities and ADHD. Explanations of the IPRC process (for parents of school aged children), how to get a psychological assessment, and strategies on how to handle different types of learning disabilities or ADHD is available. A referral to other organizations can be made if LDAWE does not have the type of information, services or programs requested. Information can be provided by phone, fax, email or in person. If coming in person, please phone ahead to make sure someone will be available to answer all of your questions. Cost is FREE.

Lending Library:

Lending Library

LDAWE’s community lending library currently has over 2,050 resources for children, youth, adults, parents and professionals. Resources include books, tapes, videos, and educational games. Topics range from learning disabilities, ADHD, behavioural problems, literacy, math, early years, education, law, parenting, social skills, adaptive technology, teaching and tutoring. For more information on our lending library please click here. Cost is FREE for LDA members or $10.00 annual fee for non-members.

Adaptive Technology Training:

LDAWE has computers in the lending library with adaptive technology software installed.  Types of adaptive technology programs currently available for use include: text-to-voice software (such as Kurzweil 3000 and Premier Literacy), voice-to-text software (such as Dragon Naturally Speaking), mind mapping software (such as Inspiration and Smart Ideas), word prediction software (such as WordQ and Co:Writer), and talking word processors (such as Write:OutLoud and Clicker 5). Individuals are welcome to come in and use the adaptive technology available for free. Introductory training on the adaptive technology can be provided (up to 5 hours) and will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual(s) requesting the training. For more information or details please call the office. Cost is $10.00 per hour for training.




Scholarships:

LDAWE has established the Reid Family Scholarship, which has been named to acknowledge the substantial contribution that Gary, Cory, and Lesley Reid made to the establishment of LDAWE. Their commitment to helping individuals with learning disabilities achieve their potential spurred many Windsor - Essex community members into action. Two awards of $500 will be given annually, one to a student at St. Clair College and one to a student at the University of Windsor, who has documented learning disabilities. Students can apply in a variety of formats (i.e. video, PowerPoint, essay, or audio recording). Please click here for more details and to download the application form.




Workshops / Conference:

LDAWE’s goal is to keep the community informed about programs, services and facilities that are available to people with learning disabilities and ADHD. In order to achieve this goal, LDAWE brings in various speakers to discuss topics relevant to learning disabilities or ADHD. Workshops may be geared for parents, adults, or professionals or employers. For a list of current upcoming workshops or conferences please see the Events page. Cost varies depending on the event.

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
BEST (Better Emotional / Social Times) Social Skills Program (8 – 12 years of age):

Poor Social Skills

Social Skills Training is offered to children that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD. Social skills training builds skills such as listening, joining in, responding to teasing, dealing with anger, avoiding trouble, accepting consequences, etc… The program teaches effective communication techniques for everyday situations using role models, role-playing, games and positive reinforcement. The training will focus on direct instruction to assist participants with strategies to successfully interact at home and at school. Cost is $150 for non-LDA members or $100.00 for LDA members per 10-week session. Subsidies may be available.

Good Social Skills

The Spring session will be offered on Tuesdays beginning on April 24, 2012.

ABC and 123 Tutoring Program (8 – 14 years of age):
The ABC and 123 Tutoring Program is offered to children that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD and are currently experiencing difficulties with basic reading, writing or math skills. A small group setting is used. Half of the class time will focus on literacy tutoring and the other half of the class time will focus on math tutoring.  The Laubach Literacy method is employed during the literacy tutoring portion of the program and the PALS Basic Math Tutoring program is employed during the math tutoring portion of the program. Many of the concepts taught will be reinforced with games and hands-on activities, with many incentives being provided to promote participation. Cost is $150 for non-LDA members or $100 for LDA members per 8-week session. Subsidies may be available. This program is offered in both Windsor and Essex.

  The Spring session in WINDSOR will be offered on Saturdays beginning on April 14, 2012.
The Spring session in ESSEX will be offered on Wednesdays beginning on April 18, 2012.

PROGRAMS FOR PARENTS
PACE (Parents Advocating ~ Children Excelling) Advocacy Training Program (Parents of Children or Youth):

PACE is offered to parents that have children or youth with a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD. PACE is an 8-hour interactive parent advocacy course that will assist parents to: understand different types of learning disabilities, develop an understanding of legislation, systems, and resources that may affect and assist children and youth with learning disabilities, understand their rights as a parent of a child or youth with a learning disability and to become a more confident advocate for their child and / or children. This course is taught jointly by a Registered Psychologist and a facilitator. Cost per 6-week session is $150 for non-LDA members or $100 for LDA members. Subsidies may be available.

PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH

Computer Enrichment Camp (10-15 years of age):

The Computer Enrichment Camp is offered to children / youth that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD and are or will be using adaptive technology at school. Participants will increase their keyboarding skills, understand how to use the internet and software programs to assist with school work completion, understand how to use and apply adaptive technology (such as Kurzweil 3000, Premier Literacy, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Co:Writer, Write:OutLoud, WordQ, and Smart Ideas) in the classroom, and understand how to avoid cyber bullying. This interactive program will help to develop skills through games, activities and projects. Cost is $150 for non-LDA members or $100 for LDA members per 7-week session.

The Spring session will be offered on Wednesdays beginning on April 25, 2012.

SOAR (Some Assembly Required) Transition Planning Program (12 - 15 years of age):

The SOAR program is offered to children / youth that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD and are about to or have recently started going to high school.  Topics discussed include: how people learn, how a learning disability interferes with learning, how to break down school work into areas and how to approach each of these areas, preparing for the changes and choices that will come in high school, and discussion is held regarding IEPs and accommodations.  Each participant will get their own workbooks to record their work.  Many of the concepts taught will be reinforced with games and hands-on activities, with incentives being provided to promote participation. Cost is $175 for non-LDA members or $125 for LDA members per 9-week session. Subsidies may be available.

The Summer session will be offered Tuesdays - Thursdays beginning on August 14, 2012.

Youth Recreation Program (13 – 18 years of age):

The Youth Recreation Program is offered to youth that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD. The youth recreation group meets once to twice per month for community recreation activities. The purpose of this program is to allow learning disabled youth to practice their social skills in an understanding environment and to allow youth the opportunity to become more active within their own community. Examples of activities include floor hockey, mini-golf, swimming, bowling, seeing a show, etc… Cost is $20.00 per 3-month session. This is a continuous intake program. Please call 519-252-7889 to register or to get further details.

PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS

SOAR High School Program (16 - 21 years of age):

SOAR HS Manual

The SOAR:HS Program is offered to young adults with diagnosed learning disabilities or ADHD who are completing high school, have recently completed high school or have dropped out of high school. This program will discuss how having a learning disability impacts on all areas of an individual's life and how to develop strategies to be successful in post-secondary education, employment and their community. Many of the concepts taught will be reinforced with games and hands-on activities, with incentives being provided to promote participation. Cost is $150 for non-LDA members of $100 for LDA members per 6-week session. Subsidies may be available.

The Winter session will be offered on Mondays beginning on January 30, 2012.

Employment Social Skills Program (18+ years of age):

Social Skills Training is offered to adults that have a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD. Social skills training builds skills such as listening, accepting consequence, reading body language, following directions, time management, dealing with anger, team building, and establishing effective working relations. Participants will become aware of how learning disabilities and ADHD affect all aspects of their lives and will determine their strengths, weaknesses and specific strategies to successfully interact on the job. Cost is $300.00 per 6-week session. This program is offered in both Windsor and in Essex County. The group meets twice a week. Individuals may be eligible through Ontario Works or ODSP – Employment Support for subsidies.

The Spring session in WINDSOR will be offered on Monday and Wednesdays beginning on April 23, 2012.

Adaptive Technology Training Program (18+ years of age):

The A/T Training program is offered to adults with self reported learning disabilities or ADHD. Participants will be introduced to word processing software and adaptive technology software such as text-to-voice software (Kurzweil 3000), voice-to-text software (Dragon Naturally Speaking) and word prediction software (Co-Writer). This program will provide adults with the tools and skills they need to independently and effectively manage time and paper, read, do research, write and utilize conflict resolution techniques with the use of adaptive technology software. Cost is $150 for non-LDA members of $100 for LDA members per 6-week session. The group meets once a week for 2 hours. Individuals may be eligible through Ontario Works or ODSP - Employment Supports for subsidies.

The Winter session will be offered on Mondays beginning on January 16, 2012.

Job Fit:

The Job Fit Program is a facilitated 2-book program for unemployed or under employed adults. This program is to assist a person who have been diagnosed or suspect they have a learning disability or ADHD to improve their understanding and awareness of themselves as competent individuals and to help them reframe their personal experience with learning disabilities into more positive experience. The profile identifies cognitive strengths, develops an awareness of learning styles, and successful compensatory strategies and accommodations, in addition to providing direction with regard to disclosure, employment planning and job readiness. Individuals may be eligible through ODSP – Employment Supports.

Job Fit Manuals


Employment Supports (Job Placement, Job Coaching, Job Advancement and Job Retention):
These services are for unemployed or under employed adults, who have been diagnosed with a learning disability or ADHD. Depending on the individual’s needs, a facilitator can help the individual write up a resume and cover letter, help in the job search, assist in filling out application forms. Once employment is obtained, a facilitator can help the individual explain accommodation needs to the employer, help fill out forms, and have meetings with the employer. Individuals must be deemed eligible for this program by ODSP – Employment Supports. For more information regarding the affect that learning disabilities and ADHD can have on employment and the benefits of hiring an individual with learning disabilities and / or ADHD please click here.

Adult Recreation Support Group:
The Adult Recreation Support Group is available to adults that have a learning disability or ADHD. The adult recreation group meets approximately once per month for community recreation activities. The purpose of this program is to allow learning disabled adults to practice their social skills with their peers and to allow adults the opportunity to become more active within their own community. Examples of activities include seeing a movie or a live show, having a card night, going to Colasantis, going out for dinner, attending information sessions, or participating in fundraising activities. Cost is FREE.
